Android, Recurrent Neural Network, Arduino, facetracking animatronic eyes, text
Galleri Wiedauer
Innsbruck, Austria

For the project I was asked by the artist David Rych to collaborate with him to conceptualise the technological part of his exhibition at the Widauer gallery. The project's initial idea was to situate an android in the gallery that will make continuous eye contact with the person entering the gallery. Eventually the project turned into a more elaborate conception of android an artificial intelligence. The android contains a sol called Convolutional Neural Network for the image part, and for the text part a Recurrent Neural Network, that together convert an image into text, and captures what the figure see. My proposal to David Rych was to 'hack' the artificial intelligence by amplifying the biases it contains. The vocabulary of the android is updated according a contemporary left zeitgeist that deals with gender politics. It has a limited subjectivity with a 'defense mechanism' towards power relations. For instance it will emphasise certain class denominators in an adversarial tone. Additionally if there are too many man in its environment it will express its discomfort by asking man to leave.
